The Freshness

It’s in the name, after all. When you get your eggs straight from the hen house, you know exactly where they’ve been. There’s no processing, shipping, or shelf life as they wait in a grocery store. As a result, the eggs have a richer color, both in the shell and the yolk. They also have a richer, more flavorful taste.

It’s Better for You

Farm fresh eggs also come with their fair share of nutritional benefits. They contain less saturated fats and bad cholesterol. Meanwhile, these eggs are an excellent source of protein in your diet. They’re also full of omega-3 fatty acids, beta carotene, and vitamins A, E, and D. These elements are all necessary for a healthy diet. In fact, many people consider farm fresh eggs to be one of the best natural food sources of vitamin D.

You Know the Chickens’ Life

A lot of loopholes and misconceptions can go into the organic or ethically raised labels you might see on store-bought eggs. One of the best ways to make sure your eggs come from a responsible source is to raise the chickens yourself. This way, you know everything about the hens’ treatment and health. You can provide organic, free-range eggs for yourself without having to worry about where they really came from.

You Get to Share

If you raise your own hens, you’re not the only one who can reap the benefits. Depending on how many chickens you have, you’re likely to have more eggs than you and your family can eat. If that’s the case, you can share—or sell—the eggs to friends, family, and other members of your community. This is a great way to make a little extra money at the local farmers’ market or simply share something nice with your neighbors.

Home grown food starts with eggs. As long as you keep daily care of your hens they will produce fresh eggs and add a thoughtful and pleasurable time communicating with nature. Yes hens do communicate. They certainly know when yo are coming to see them! Taking them treats will increase the pleasure of an excited response. I use a combination of scratch grains and wild bird seed. they can have a handful for a group of 10 but no more so that they still get their correct ration of protein from the balanced layer feed. Keep them very clean and they will flourish. Use garden lime under their shavings and the bacteria will disappear as well as insects and disease. I keep Silkies and have for over 50 years. Every year I learn more about my birds and surround myself with them! Have Fun! Golden Egg Farm, Kate
