How To Clean Chicken Coops For Spring

Just like how people use the springtime to clean their homes, you should do the same for your chickens’ coop! Read our guide for a step-by-step look into everything that you will need to do to ensure your flock’s area is clean.

Step 1: Remove Anything Inside The Coop

The first step to cleaning out a chicken coop is to remove everything from the coop and nest boxes. This allows you to have easy access to the coop for a deeper clean.

Step 2: Get Rid of Droppings, Debris, and Old Bedding

Out with the old and in with the new! It’s important to remove any droppings or dirty material from your chicken coop. Once that is done, use a broom to remove any dust and cobwebs that may have accumulated over the winter.

Step 3: Disinfect the Coop and Any Items

Use Tek-Trol to disinfect the walls and floor. This disinfectant-cleaner concentrate works great for cleaning and disinfecting at one time! This step is important to prevent disease.

After that, hose down the coops, nest boxes, and clean any feeders and waterers that your birds use. Consider cleaning your feeders and waterers several times throughout the month to ensure that your birds always have access to a clean water and food source.

Let the coop and nest boxes air-dry.

Step 4: Repair and Add New Items

Once you’re done cleaning the inside and outside of the coop, you may notice some damage. Repair any damages before letting your flock back into the coop to keep them safe from predators.

Sprinkling Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth on the floor of the coop is a great way to add an extra level of protection from insects! Diatomaceous Earth can help your birds stay mite- and lice-free.

Finally, add new nest bedding to your nest boxes to create a comfortable and stress-free environment for your flock!

Step 5: Put Your Flock Back In The Coop

The final and easiest step to cleaning your hive is to bring your flock back to their freshly-cleaned coop! The flock will appreciate the new and clean environment.
