The Mottled Houdan is a v-shaped comb, clean legged variety that originated in France. The Houdan have 5 toes, a beard, and a crest which sets them a part from many other breeds. Very promising qualities as both a meat bird and a good white egg layer. This breed has a friendly, docile nature, with long speckled shanks and beautiful full crest.

houdan cold hardy
I bought a bunch of black australorp chicks this year because, where I am, I wanted good winter birds. I wound up with only one girl out of the bunch and, since I don't want her breeding her brothers/cousins I sought a rooster that either contributed to that breed or was part BA. I acquired a blue australorp/mottled houdan cross roo. Now, we've been below freezing for a time here and my purebred BA roos - the winter chickens - are sporting quite a bit of frostbite on their combs whereas Greybeard, who has the biggest comb by far (single splitting into double/V-comb) has none! And he is more houdan than he is australorp, and also outdoors more than any of the others. He is an excellent flier, does 50' no problem! And therefore spends very little time in the warm, insulated coop.
