The amherst is the nearest competitor to the golden pheasant. They are very similar to the golden pheasant and just as hardy. In the wild, they come from further south in china than the golden, but tend to live at higher altitudes in bamboo thickets. Males can be aggressive toward the hens, so have brush or cover in the pens.
