Description
Trumpeter Swans are the largest waterfowl species in North America, renowned for their impressive size and majestic presence. Males typically weigh over 25 pounds and can reach up to 6 feet in length—almost twice the size of a Tundra Swan. These elegant birds are primarily found in shallow lakes, ponds, rivers, and marshes. They are herbivores, feeding mainly on aquatic plants, and may forage in agricultural fields during the winter months. Known for their strong pair bonds, Trumpeter Swans return to the same nesting sites each year. Their distinctive trumpet-like calls are the inspiration for their name.
Historically, Trumpeter Swans faced near extinction due to overhunting and habitat loss. Today, they are protected under federal and state laws, and permits are required for ownership or keeping these birds.
